If you want the gentlest entry point, Profit First is rated 2/10 for difficulty. The most demanding is Zero to One at 6/10 — worth knowing before you start it rather than three chapters in.

How were these ten chosen?
Chosen to be read before you commit money, not after. The most expensive mistakes in a new business are made in the first few weeks, when the decisions look small: the structure, the pricing, who you agreed to work with and on what terms. So the emphasis is on testing demand cheaply and understanding the commitments you are taking on. Two of these are less about starting than about what running it actually feels like day to day, which is the thing most first-timers have no data on. If reading this list puts you off starting, that is a useful outcome and considerably cheaper than the alternativ
Do I have to read them in order?
No. The numbering reflects how strongly we would recommend each one, not a sequence. Most people are best starting with whichever addresses the problem in front of them right now, and the difficulty ratings on each review will tell you what you are taking on.
