Top 10 Books Every New Business Owner Should Read

The first year of owning a business teaches you things no course can — these books shorten the learning curve considerably.

How this list was chosen

Chosen for the first year, when almost every decision is being made for the first time and there is no internal precedent to lean on. The priority was breadth over depth: enough of pricing, cash, selling and structure to stop the obvious mistakes.

Where two books covered the same ground, we took the shorter one. Reading time is genuinely scarce at this stage, and a 200-page book you finish beats a 500-page book you abandon at chapter four.

One warning that applies to the whole list. Almost all of it is written by people whose businesses worked, and you are reading a selected sample. Take the reasoning and be sceptical of the confidence.

What is actually on this list

Ten books, published between 1995 and 2019, averaging 7.7 out of 10 overall. By subject they break down as business (5), money (2), strategy (2), innovation (1). Every one has a full review here with ratings for practicality, readability, impact and difficulty, plus who it is for and who should not bother.

If you want the gentlest entry point, Profit First is rated 2/10 for difficulty. The most demanding is Zero to One at 6/10 — worth knowing before you start it rather than three chapters in.

Do I have to read them in order?

No. The numbering reflects how strongly we would recommend each one, not a sequence. Most people are best starting with whichever addresses the problem in front of them right now, and the difficulty ratings on each review will tell you what you are taking on.

Are the Amazon links paid?

They earn a small commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. It has no bearing on what makes a list or what rating a book gets — several books on this site are reviewed and then recommended against.
