How were these ten chosen?
These are books that get politely mentioned and rarely pressed into someone's hands. The difference between this and the hidden gems list is profile: these are known, they are simply undersold. Often the reason is that the book asks something of you. It has a framework you have to actually apply, or numbers you have to actually work out, or an argument that does not resolve into a slogan. That makes for a quieter reputation and a better return on the reading. If you have read the obvious canon and found it thin, this is the list to start on next.
Do I have to read them in order?
No. The numbering reflects how strongly we would recommend each one, not a sequence. Most people are best starting with whichever addresses the problem in front of them right now, and the difficulty ratings on each review will tell you what you are taking on.
